Raffaella Maria Balestrini

Researches mainly focus on different aspects of plant-symbiotic fungi interactions (endo and ectomycorrhizae). Researches currently developed, using molecular/cellular approaches including confocal microscope, in situ hybridization and laser microdissection (LMD), are: genomics and functional genomics in mycorrhizal fungi (Tuber species, R. irregularis, Tulasnella calospora); cellular and molecular interactions between plants and mycorrhizal fungi, with particular attention to plant and fungal cell wall modifications; transcriptome profiling of specific cell types involved in mycorrhizal symbiosis. Involved in the black truffle Tuber melanosporum genome project as the person in charge of the cell wall related genes annotation and, thanks to the experience in gene expression and cell biology studies in mycorrhizal associations, in post-genomic activities. Currently, she is involved in a comparative genomics project devoted to Pezizomycetes fungi, including three truffle species (T. melanosporum, T. magnatum and T. aestivum). Thanks to the acquired expertise, she has worked with research groups from national and international institutions in joined research projects, as mirrored by the several papers in collaboration. Referee for several international journals. She is member of the Editorial Board of Biology and Fertility of Soils and PLOS One (as Academic Editor); member of the Editorial Board of Frontiers in Systems Microbiology as Review Editor.
