Mariantonietta Colagiero

The research work is focused on biocontrol methods for sustainable plant growth and environmentally safe procedures for phytonematode management. In this perspective, the focus is on analysis and identification, through a metagenomic approach, of the diversity and interactions present in a nematodes – plant host rhizosphere -soil bacteria system.
Research data showed variations in the bacterial diversity in relation to different environmental conditions, also active on very small volumes, confirming that soil biodiversity is not a static and definitive condition, but it’s subject to many external factors.
Furthermorewe identified Bacillus and Pseudomonas spp.associated to root-knot nematodes, which showed efficacy as biocontrol agents. Data and knowledge produced on soil microbial biodiversity can be useful when studying the indicators of soil quality and stability, in terms of agricultural production and biological and ecological stability.

Another field of interest is the study of the differential gene expression in tomato roots during colonization by the endophytic fungus Pochonia clamydiosporia.

Finally, research allowed the isolation and description of a new species of Hirsutella proceeding from soil and root fragments, collected in asparagus rhizosphere in during a bilateral activity between CNR and CONCYTEC (Peru).
