Pasquale Saldarelli devoted its main research interests to the viral diseases of grapevine and Mediterranean crops. He described several new viruses and the associated diseases using next generation sequencing technologies, developed biotechnological methods and tools for virus detection. He is committing his efforts to the study of the Xylella fastidiosa outbreak in olive in Apulia and the associated Olive Quick Decline Syndrome. He contributed to the genome studies of X. fastidiosa isolates identified in Europe, to the analysis of the olive response and to the description of the microbiome of plants infected by this bacterium. He is currently investigating the Xylella resistance traits in olive and the adoption of biopesticides for the control of the bacterium and its insect vector. He is a member of the Scientific Committee of the International Council of Virus and Virus-like Diseases of the Grapevine and of the ICTV Beta-, Gamma-, Deltaflexiviridae Study Group. He participated to several EU and national projects dealing with plant diseases of grapevine and Mediterranean crops and is currently responsible for the IPSP CNR of the activities of the Projects BIOVEXO and BIOSAVEX.
