Luisa Rubino

My research focuses on positive strand RNA plant virus replication. A combination of genomics and microscopy approaches is used to address fundamental problems using model systems. Tombusviruses are used as model viruses to identify the replication molecular mechanisms of viral genomic RNA and of subviral RNA molecules (satellite and defective interfering RNAs) in plants. Saccharomyces cerevisiae is also used as a model host to investigate virus-host interactions and to identify host factors involved in tombusvirus replication. The group is involved in the analysis of targeting and anchoring of the virus replicase proteins to cell membranes and of the formation of the viral replication complex. Approaches that have practical relevance to the development of new antiviral strategies are also explored.
