URCOFI

The project includes the following activities, (pests change basing on the old and new emergencies):

1) The intensification of monitoring on new invasive pests (Alert list of pests);

2) To support the Regional diagnostic plant pathology laboratory in order to improve the recognition of quarantine and / or invasive species of: insects, bacteria, fungi, viruses, viroids and nematodes;

3) The arrangement of sampling plans with periodical monitoring at farms and nurseries damaged by pest organisms and microorganisms;

4) The development of an effective system of monitoring of invasive species at ports and customs;

5) The development of highly sensitive and specific molecular identification techniques for the detection of quarantine and / or invasive species of: insects, bacteria, fungi, viruses, viroids and nematodes;

6) The improvement of the existing techniques of diagnosis or the development and testing of new ones cheaper or with a higher sensitivity and / or specificity;

7) The quick identification of new invasive pest species and the development of simplified dichotomous or interactive keys for initial and precise identification of the species contained in section A1 and A2 EPPO (European and Mediterranean Organization for Plant Protection);

8 ) The development of cheaper and more efficient sampling methods for the mandatory monitoring of insects and microorganisms;

9) The preparation of data sheets (with pictures) on new invasive species;

10) The implementation of operational plans for the control of species (fungi, bacteria, viruses, viroids, nematodes, insects) newly introduced and the drafting of data sheets for farmers;

11) Contributions and scientific suggestions in drafting and updating IPM programs;

12) The realization of updating seminars or other actions to disseminate new data about both new invasive species (fungi, bacteria, viruses, viroids, nematodes, insects) or about endemic but still harmful pests.
