Defence responses against nematodes and viruses induced by ozone treatments in tomato
The use of ozone as a sustainable alternative to traditional chemicals for pest management is an interesting approach since previous experiments demonstrated its effectiveness against a large number of pathogens and for the lack of residues in cultivated plants. This molecule is an inducer of systemic resistance in plants. Because atmospheric ozone is phytotoxic, the application as aqueous solution is feasible in innovative crop protection schemes. Aim of this project is to evaluate the effectiveness of aqueous ozone in the control of the root-knot nematode M. incognita and Tomato spotted wilt virus in tomato. The ability of ozone as resistance inducer will be evaluated in both susceptible and resistant cultivars. The method of application and the concentration of aqueous ozone will be investigated for best performances on plant resistance and health. Furthermore expression levels of genes involved in plant defence response and/or in metabolic pathways regulated by phytohormones.
