BIOSCIC

The project coordinated by IPSP aims at developing and spreading sustainable (organic) techniques for the control of chestnut fruit borers, moths and beetles, in alternative to chemical control. The latter, apart from environmental pollution in chestnut woods, often disrupts biological interactions causing the outburst of secondary pests. The project will setup a protocol for the control of primary pests based on biological control and mating disruption. Hymenoptera biodiversity will be used as a tool to measure chestnut health. The ultimate aim is to increase the quality of the product maybe arriving to organic productions which are increasingly requested and are characterized by higher prices. A specific target of the project will be the precocious moth Pammene fasciana which is now considered the key pest in chestnut orchards of Southern Italy.
